Dear reader,

There’s a lot going on in the world right now.

When times get tough, the things that matter the least to the world can mean the most to the individual.

I hope this newsletter, along with the videos and articles produced daily by Traxion, offer some welcome relief from the news of the world. If nothing else, our work might serve to remind us of the joys of creativity, culture, community, sport and gaming at precisely the moment it seems the most futile.

Grab a coffee, this is a nice one.

iRacing Arcade, Maverick Games and Mods

iRacing Arcade releases today, Amazon drops Maverick Games' AAA driving game and a new mod platform launches.

How did iRacing Arcade happen?

This isn’t a review. Tom Harrison-Lord and team are, right this second, playing the game, noting their thoughts, capturing footage and writing the video script. I’m intrigued to see what they make of it.

I was lucky enough to be sent a game code by Original Fire Games last week and I was able to play a few hours over the weekend and on Monday.

For me, it is even better than I expected.

I could write a long piece about how the side-by-side racing is consistently excellent or how the pit stops are incredibly satisfying or how the slipstreaming/tow mechanics offer detailed race craft gameplay that has no business being in such a cutesy game… but I wont.

Instead, Carolina Mastretta, founder and studio lead of Original Fire Games kindly gave me a few moments of her time allow me to dive a little deeper into the story behind this collaboration between stalwart sim racing company, iRacing, and family-run indie game studio Original Fire Games.

“How did iRacing approach you to create iRacing Arcade?”

“Steve [Myers] and I spoke very early after Circuit Superstars shipped. He reached out mostly as a fan of Circuit Superstars, wanting to connect with us and learn more about our company and what we were up to.

“From then on, we just developed a relationship and once in a while we would get together and chat about progress with Circuit Superstars and other endeavours. It was in 2023 around the summer that we started to talk more seriously about potentially partnering to build something together.

“Steve really wanted to build a game that invited people to experience the fantasy of creating a motorsport team and participating in different categories of motorsport. And having grown up around racetracks ourselves, myself and my siblings, them being race car drivers and me being kind of a pit crew to them throughout my life, we really resonated with this idea.”

Carolina Mastretta
“How much of the game is an iteration on Circuit Superstars and how much is built from scratch?”

“So much is built from scratch. Our track building technology has completely evolved from what we used to have.

“All of our art had to go through a process of refinement, we create this stylized art style in a more detailed and loyal way to be seen a lot closer. So the game feels a lot less like a diorama, and a lot more like a cute real world that you are a part of.

“Throughout our time having Original Fire Games, which has been seven years now, we've been building what we refer to as a racing toolkit. It's all the technology that allows us to have leaderboards, ghosts, replays, racing systems in the racetracks.

“There's a bunch of racing systems for making a racing game that were built during Circuit Superstars, others were built during Karting Superstars, and we've certainly developed a ton during iRacing Arcade”

Carolina Mastretta
“What inspired the campus building idea?”

“When Steve and I were conceptualizing this project, one of the things that became important was this idea that you're building a racing business.

“Steve is a big fan of strategy games, and he really liked the idea of building a base that you could optimize and that would contribute to your racing in-game.

“At the beginning, we thought that we were just going to have some buildings that you would upgrade but it became important at four or five months into the project to make that space something that belonged to the player and something that the player could really put their decisions into, their personalities into to customize.

This is a place where you can just be cozy, rest from the racing, and use your money to decorate this little diorama space that reflects your progression in the game so far”

Carolina Mastretta
“How did you enjoy working with Licenced Content?“

“We really enjoyed creating the licensed content. It's inspiring to have, for example, the Mexico City track, which is our hometown. It's inspiring to have Miami.

“Obviously there's perks to having our own content, like there are tracks from Circuit Superstars like Sugar Hill and Maple Ridge that are obviously very close to our hearts.

“But having licensed content feels like an opportunity to attract people that want to have these experiences and it's also a creative opportunity to think about how are we going to make this track fit this tiny world and make these race tracks fun to race in with little fast cars.

“So I would say it was really enjoyable, having a Porsche and a Fiat in our game as an independent small studio feels unreal and I'm really grateful.”

Carolina Mastretta

It is clear to me that iRacing Arcade is a labour of love; love that has come from both Original Fire Games and iRacing in equal parts.

I don’t think it would be fair to say that the title is merely an iteration on Circuit Superstars - far from it. It is the product of seven years of evolution and maturing followed by a beautiful marriage to an unlikely soulmate laden with expertise, energy and of course, licences.

Maverick Games Defiant in Face of Amazon

Maverick Games, creator of a yet-to-be-announced AAA driving game, responded quickly to the news that Amazon had dropped the title in what some have called Amazon’s “game cull”.

Striking while the iron is hot, the studio released the first apparently in-game screenshot of the driving title:

Featuring two (possibly three 👀) road cars, a cobbled street, after-market wheel rims and perhaps a slither of garage - we think we’re looking at an open-world driving experience where drivers can collect and customise cars in their garage before presumably racing them around streets and/or race circuits in the South of France.

The studio has set the tone with how they responded to this. If I was going to read into this (potentially too much!), I’d say they’re decisive, committed to their goals and full of energy to deliver a high-quality product.

Mods, moderated.

Friend of Traxion.gg and serial mastermind involved in brands such as RaceDepartment, Simracing.GP and SimGrid, Steve Worrell, has created yet another sim racing venture.

They say that business can simply be boiled down to “solutions for problems”.

Well, Steve has certainly found a problem to be solved.

Any sim racer worth their salt has struggled through the world of mods. Finding a good mod is tough. Spread across multiple websites and hard-to-search forums, knowing how good or safe or legal a mod is before you download it has been a challenge.

Until now … right Steve?!

SimFoundry.gg is “a curated directory of thousands of the best Assetto Corsa mods with easy to use filter and search.”

I spoke to Steve to discover a little more about his motivations to commit to such an undertaking.

“I was getting frustrated not being able to find mods that met my preferences.

“Browsing Overtake.gg is basically impossible, you have very limited controls which means some really good quality content gets buried on page 64 of 1000 because there are so many work in progress, abandoned projects, deleted projects and also poor quality mods.

“I decided to curate all the Overtake.gg mods and tag them appropriately to make finding the mods you want easier. I then thought it would be a good idea to include professional modding studios too as their work is exceptional and should be supported.”

I’m looking forward to seeing how this tool grows and evolved over time.

Good luck Steve!
